Teeth discoloration can occur for many reasons, including staining from many of the foods and drinks we enjoy every day. Teeth also discolor naturally as we age or can be the result of smoking or other habits. Because of this discoloration, having whiter teeth is the number one aesthetic dental concern of most patients and fortunately, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.
Tooth whitening is also called bleaching and is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel. It is an easy and painless way to enhance the beauty of your smile. The whitening process only works on natural tooth enamel, so it is important to evaluate if there are old fillings or crowns that must be replaced after bleaching so that they will match the color of your newly whitened teeth.
Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be required every several years to keep your smile bright, and more frequently if you smoke or drink coffee, tea, or wine.
We offer a variety of tooth whitening services to address a variety of issues or concerns. The most common process requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.
At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and we will make adjustments if needed. You will also receive care instructions for your teeth and trays at this time. We use a special formula that is placed in the trays and then fitted over your teeth. The amount of time you wear the trays will be determined by the specific bleaching gel we give you as well as the degree of stains and desired level of whitening. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.
