Dental emergencies can happen at any time and not always during office hours, but we are here to help. If you are experiencing a dental emergency and need same-day service, call Petrone Family Dentistry at 904.783.0917. If the emergency occurs during our standard office hours, call us and you will be given immediate attention and be seen as soon as possible.
Please don’t wait until regular office hours to contact us if you are experiencing dental pain, have a broken tooth, or are having problems with a filling or implant. Call Petrone Family Dentistry and we can get you seen as soon as possible.
After experiencing a dental emergency and before you can be seen, there are steps you can take to minimize your pain and further damage to the tooth. These steps vary depending on the type of emergency you are experiencing.
Call our office immediately so you can be seen today. Next, follow these steps: 1. Do not touch the tooth root, but instead hold the tooth by the crown and gently rinse it with water. 2. Place the tooth back into the socket as quickly as possible and bite down on clean gauze to hold it in place. 3. If the tooth cannot be placed in the socket, put the tooth in a small container of milk or saliva and bring it with you to your appointment.
Call us immediately because the sooner we treat you, the better the chance of us saving as much of your natural tooth as possible. In addition, you should gently rinse the area with lukewarm water and place a cold compress on the face to reduce swelling. Apply gentle pressure to the gum (not the tooth) in order to stop the bleeding (if any). If possible, save any tooth pieces that have broken off, place the piece in milk, and bring it with you to the office.
If you have lost a crown or overlay, try to retrieve and save them because they are made in a lab and can be expensive to replace. If you lose a filling, don’t save it because it will need to be replaced. Next, call us to schedule a same-day visit because it is possible that the nerve of the tooth is exposed and you are experiencing pain. Avoid drinking anything hot or cold, or chewing on the area of the mouth of the lost filling or crown until we have been able to repair or replace the lost crown of filling.
While we are always here for our patients, sometimes you don’t need the stress and expense of an emergency office visit. Some minor dental emergencies can be addressed at home followed by a scheduled dental appointment within a day or two of the incident.
First, gently clean the area around the tooth by rinsing the mouth with warm water. Next, carefully floss around the tooth to remove any particles that may be lodged in the surrounding tissue. If the pain continues, call our office for immediate care.
Apply ice to help reduce swelling and then apply pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze to stop any bleeding. If the bleeding continues, call your physician or visit your local emergency room.
Unless there is severe pain or bleeding, stay calm and comfort your child. This situation can be addressed at an appointment and you should call to schedule one as soon as possible.
At Petrone Family Dentistry, we understand that unanticipated dental problems can occur at any time of the day or night and we are ready to help. Call us to receive same-day care if you or a loved one experience a dental emergency.
