Bonding is a fast and relatively low-cost tooth restoration procedure which utilizes a plastic resin compound that comes in many different shades to match your natural teeth. This versatile medium allows Dr. Petrone to sculpt the material into the size and shape that is appropriate for your restoration or cosmetic needs. The result is a tooth that looks completely natural, with no distinction between the actual tooth and the bonding material.

Direct composite bonding is typically more cost-effective than dental veneers, making it a popular choice for many patients. Bonding allows patients to have a beautiful smile today and revisit their cosmetic concerns later when they are ready for a permanent dental veneer.

Uses of Bonding

In addition to price, direct composite bonding is a great option for patients because it requires the removal of less tooth enamel than the application of porcelain veneers. Also, it can be completed in one visit because there is no wait for a dental lab to create a veneer. The entire treatment process takes place in the office.

Bonding can be used to repair teeth that are:

  • Decayed
  • Cracked
  • Discolored

This process is also used cosmetically to:

  • Fill in gaps between teeth;
  • Lengthen a tooth to match the others; and
  • Address other cosmetic issues.

The Bonding Procedure

Direct composite bonding can often be completed in one visit and numbing the tooth is usually not required. The process begins with Dr. Petrone lightly etching the area of the tooth to be bonded and applying the bonding liquid. Once the bonding resin is set, Dr. Petrone will trim, smooth and polish it to create a natural appearance. When completed, the bonded area should blend perfectly with your natural tooth.

Limitations of Bonding

While the bonding will look and function like the original tooth, it isn’t as strong as your natural tooth enamel. Because of this, it is more likely to stain, chip or break than a natural tooth. Dental composite bonding typically lasts three to five years before repair is required. Despite this limitation, it remains the fastest and most cost-effective process for addressing specific repair and cosmetic dental needs.

Resources

See what our patients are saying!

  • On 23 August I had oral surgery with Dr. Petrone for about 3 hours removing all my upper teeth in which about 5 of them had to be surgically removed, 4 implants installed and then stitched up. Dr. Petrone is a professional and did a great job, I would recommend him to anyone who needs dental work. His administrative staff is also outstanding as the way they assist patients.
